Fitness while traveling takes some preparation!
Looking at the straps suspended from the ceiling, we are dubious but it is too late now to back out. We are committed to our fitness while traveling and it is because of this, that we are about to try TRX for the first time. Fortunately, there is no hanging upside down, as initially feared and it proves to be a good workout. Similar feelings were experienced the day before when we tackled our first Cardio Cycle/Chair Yoga class, but happily, we survived all of it.
Staying fit while traveling is challenging. For indoor exercising, we rely on apps/websites like Sworkit, Fitness Blender, and Do Yoga With Me. We much prefer outdoors, and research online prior to our arrival, looking for walk/jog paths and/or par courses and adult playgrounds. However, circumstances at a recent housesit with two large dogs, in a small development eliminated our usual options.
Join a local gym to stay fit while traveling.
For the first time, we are going to join the local gym. Wauchope Fitness Center has aerobic dance classes, strength training, exercise equipment, and more – we try it all and have a great time doing so! Classes not only put a structure into our daily schedule (or lack thereof) but also create lasting friendships, hiking/tourist tips, “snags on the Barbie” invites, and coffee “get-togethers” after class.
Try the local “Y” to stay fit.
Our next trip is a family reunion in Minnesota. While there, we decide to visit the “Y” in Grand Rapids and the Mercy Wellness Center in Moose Lake. Once again, we meet up with wonderful people, enjoy the camaraderie, and talk with a couple with plans to visit Kauai! HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) and strength training classes make staying fit while traveling easy. Both establishments are friendly and welcoming, even if we are only there for a day or two.
Most recently, we decide to join SkyFit while in Cuenca for several months. Our “Fitness over Fifty” class is 3 times a week and we love it! The owner, Sky Rajewski, is the total fitness package with a wicked sense of humor. If you find yourself in Cuenca looking for exercise classes, Sky gets our vote! You can find her classes on GringoPost.
Fitness while traveling adds even more to your journey!
Typically solitary “exercisers,” it surprises us how much joining a gym adds to our travel experiences. Exercise, of course, but also fun, friendship, camaraderie, and a chance to learn about the area from those who live there, are unexpected bonuses.
“Free” fitness is the best.
Many health clubs allow for one or two free “exploratory” classes. You can pay by the visit or join for a week, month, or more. Since “Clubs” tend to have a core group, conversation flows naturally as you get to know one another. You will stay fit and have a great time doing so! Try it at your next travel destination. Let us know about your experience!
